This classic novel was first published as a book on 14 November 1883. It has since become one of the most often dramatized and adapted of all novels, in numerous media.
The most colourful and complex fictional character in the book is the one-legged cook aboard the Hispaniola and the secret leader of the pirates, Long John Silver. His missing leg and parrot, in particular, have greatly contributed to the image of the pirate in popular culture. He was based in part on Stevenson's friend and mentor as you will see in the book.
