He has wisely built his narrative around an admirable lead character who remains conscientious and well meaning despite operating in a doubtlessly dirty business. A larger cast of supporting characters might have enlivened the story a bit, but perhaps the narrator's relative isolation is the point-he largely operates alone and must be able to rely solely on his own ingenuity. The author deftly illuminates the mind of someone capable of handling such intricate, high-stakes work.
