San Francisco magician Emma Passant is puzzled by her grandfather's cryptic will. Charles Mathes for many years ran an international play-publishing and licensing company. He is now an appraiser of fine and decorative arts in New York City, where he lives with his wife, Arlene Graston, an artist and writer. Mr. Mathes is the author of several books.
