Service in the armed forces of the United States if by invitation only and rather than risk waiting for uncertain offers of his P-19 results he decides to accept a contract from the Corps for a pilot armored warfare program.

Not sure what the Corps sees in him, Kai finds himself teamed with an artificial intelligence, an ultra advanced targeting computer he names Sue, part of his crew in the new infantry fighting vehicle he's expected to command. Kai just wants his life to make a difference.

Unknown to him, Sue wants exactly the same thing, only she has plans of her own.
