A neurologist has invented an ingenious device allowing two people to communicate through exchanging thought waves. By focusing his laser machine on the brain of his intended target, Dr. Luke Pope can initiate a conversation and explore a person's mind. He calls his device the SoulTaker because it can retrieve the subject's thoughts and experiences; it may also implant ideas. Luke's difficulty with his creation is giving the system operator access to whatever information is held in that person's mind. This moral dilemma of invading an individual's privacy is a problem for Luke. Whoever operates his system can capitalize on the confidential information gathered. Fortunately, he excludes others from using the system by keeping the algorithm to operate it to himself.
