by Baroness Orczy (Author)
The cases and adventures of a legendary lawyer and sleuth
The author of this book will be readily identified as the creator of the perennially
popular, Scarlet Pimpernel stories. Although the tales of revolutionary France may be this writer's most enduring legacy, her literary output was, quite typically for authors of her time, prodigious. She turned her pen to several series of detective stories and this collection- though comparatively unknown- could well have been influential on the works and characters of later writers of the genre. Skin o' my Tooth is, in fact, a nickname appropriately bestowed upon the Irish lawyer and investigator, Patrick Mulligan, who whilst not especially popular among his peers, was incisively
effective in his clients' interests- saving some of them from the gallows-'by the skin of their teeth'. These stories are narrated by Mulligan's faithful confidential clerk affectionately known as, 'Muggins'. Together Mulligan and Muggins embark on a collection of seemingly hopeless cases employing dogged and occasionally unscrupulous guile and brinkmanship to save the day.
Ideal tales for readers who enjoy mystery fiction of the 'between the wars' period.
