In May 1940, Hitler, in his rush to capture Paris, took a shortcut by invading Belgium. Belgium was no match for the Nazis and surrendered. This situation prompted two ordinary people, a fisherman and a teacher from the same coastal region in Belgium, to embark on an effort to join the British forces in England. When the exodus from Dunkirk to England evaporated before their eyes, they decided to try their luck via Spain, a thousand miles away through Nazi occupied France.
