It's November 1776: George Washington has just lost the campaign to save Manhattan and its environs from capture by a massive British naval and ground invasion force. Thousands of his men have been killed or captured. The Continental Army is a shadow of its former strength and even worse, is disintegrating through massive desertions and expiration of enlistments. General William Howe's combined British-Hessian army is poised for the kill. Meanwhile, certain generals are conspiring to replace Washington as army commander. He knows that to remain in command, he must find a refuge to rebuild his shattered force. In this critical hour, he turns to his trusted friend and fellow Virginian, General Hugh Mercer, to work out a plan for survival.
