Ireland has a rich history of storytelling, with its many tales of heroes, giants, sea-folk, fairies and witchcraft. Here, Arthur Rackham's distinctive artwork, along with illustrations by other artists from the turn of the twentieth century, accompany powerful tales of the early Celts and the later stories of an Ireland of mighty hearths, dreaming of battlefield glory, ancient gods and mystical isles.
D.L. Ashliman, an emeritus professor at the University of Pittsburgh, taught folklore, mythology, German, and comparative literature at that institution for thirty-three years. He also served as guest professor at the University of Augsburg in Germany. He is the editor of the Aesop's Fables volume in the Barnes and Noble Classics series. His book-length publications include two volumes in the Folklore Handbooks series of Greenwood Press: Folk and Fairy Tales (2004) and Fairy Lore (2005). He authored numerous articles in the four-volume encyclopedia Folktales and Fairy Tales (Greenwood Press, 2016).
