Bertha "Van" Edwards North's manuscript remained hidden, yellowed and bound, as Brown reported, in a family collection for decades. The book was so revelatory that publishers in the early 1960s refused to print it, fearing prosecution like Penguin Books saw for Lady Chatterley's Lover. She died on New Year's Day 2000 without seeing her revelatory work published.

Her grandson, Bill Seymour, a university professor and journalist, decided it was time the world read the story his grandmother had crafted against the backdrop of life's twists and turns in love, lust and loss of self and community.
