Roaming foggy byways, seedy taverns, glitzy theaters, and posh restaurants, we follow Hammett and Holmes as they search for Jack the Ripper through the streets of Victorian London.

As with the author's previous Dashiell Hammett novels, this installment features guest stars such as Mark Twain, Sir Randolph Churchill, H.G. Wells, Richard Mansfield, Nellie Bly, and Queen Victoria. The social context of the murders is also examined; the newspaper coverage, suspects, police officers, and the deplorable conditions of life in the East End that kept the Whitechapel murders on the front pages.
