The rollicking, folk-based tales of Rajasthani writer Vijaydan Detha have been winning awards in India since the 1970s. Only recently, however, have they been available in English translation.
Vijaydan Detha is a writer from Rajasthan and co-founder, with Komal Kothari, of Rupayan Samsthan, a folklore institute in the village of Borunda. Among other prestigious recognitions, he was inducted as a fellow of India's Sahitya (literature) academy in 2004 and in 2007 was awarded a Padma Shri by the government of India.
