Abraham Winslow, young Boston lawyer attached to the US embassy in Vienna, has a chance encounter with the composer, Johannes Brahms. Brahms invites Abraham to enjoy some of Vienna's musical and non-musical attractions. Abraham's diplomatic duties take him to Bosnia, Serbia and Galicia, to report on developments in the far-flung parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Abraham discusses the US Constitution with Crown Prince Rudolph, heir to the Hapsburg throne, who wants to reform the empire he will one day inherit.
