Based on historical events that occurred in S gou, Mali, during the reign of King Biton Coulibaly and Queen Banadj , N'Golo is traded into servitude by his uncle Yiriba, in exchange of taxes Yiriba owes the King. Yiriba's true motive is to uproot N'Golo from the family to negate a prophesy predicting N'Golo's greatness. Yiriba hopes that in so doing, the prophesy will benefit one of his (Yiriba's) offsprings instead. Events unfold in ways that only a few had the foresight to predict.
