by Bex Naylor (Illustrator), Willa Naylor (Author)
This is a real life first person account of a trans advocate child's journey from early beginnings of knowing her true self through transition into out public advocate. Willa has written this children's book to inspire hope and empowerment in children just like her, and help educate society at large, on what it's like to be a trans child in the world today. The book also has simplified quotes at the top of each page for the benefit of any younger readers, with the main paragraph having more detail, so children of different reading levels can still read along. Willa Naylor is an eight year old trans advocate from Malta, Europe, and is determined to make a difference in the world. Willa was adamant from the start that she wanted to use her story to help others. The family's fight helped lead to the Gender Identity, Gender Expression & Sexual Characteristics Act (GIGESC) made law in Malta in April 2015, being dedicated to her and she was the first child invited into parliament to watch the vote as it passed into law. On that day they also decided to support their daughter's desire to be an open trans advocate and went public with their story. Since then they have joined Gender Liberation, an NGO for trans rights, as a trans girl and family outreach officers. This has led to Willa writing and reading her first ever speech, at a campus debate at the University of Malta (which you can read to follow!), advocacy engagements within education, television appearances for the Naylor's as well as Willa having her own photographer / videographer following her story for photographic projects and exhibitions based on her. With the cause so close to their hearts, they stand side by side on fighting for transgender rights, visibility, education and empowerment. In 2015, Willa was also asked to write a script and be filmed for a campaign by Transgender Europe for the depathologisation of transgender in childhood, as well as appearing in a feature for the fight for LGBTIQ educational material in schools in her country. Heavily supported, and with her activism still a big passion in her life, Willa intends to continue her advocacy work in the future.
