by Dan Camilli (Author)

"Dan Camilli is a natural born teacher. Reeya's Earth Day is full of powerful insights on American social, political, and economic history. Camilli brilliantly describes our present cultural landscape and how we may collectively bring about positive change through the practice of radical empathy." - Bobbie Bell, Playwright, Director, Professor Emeritus, and former Chair of Humanities, History, and Modern Languages, Seminole State College of Florida

As Democratic Socialism and the Green New Deal and Black Lives Matter continue to make headlines, Reeya's Earth Day offers a provocative and inspirational call to action on behalf of social justice.

Disaffected high school senior Reeya Patel discovers the true meaning of social consciousness from an Earth Day guest speaker, who teaches the urgent importance of civic engagement and the shared responsibility of working toward a more humane, sustainable global culture.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dan Camilli grew up in a Boston working class family. The first in his family to graduate high school, Dan went on to earn graduate degrees from both Harvard University and the University of Maryland at College Park after earning a B.A., Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Massachusetts at Boston ( Formerly Boston State College). An award-winning educator, curriculum writer, and a Massachusetts Teacher of the Year nominee, Dan received a Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Scholarship to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He then continued his studies in Japan as a Keizai Koho Fellow. Dan was then awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to conduct independent research to further develop curriculum for his innovative and popular history, philosophy and world cultures courses. Dan created and hosted a podcast called “Nature, Sport and the Spirit” where he interviewed award-winning playwrights, sculptors, painters and others about their passion for what they do and their experience with the creative process. He is a columnist and blogger, writing about topics as diverse as the nature of time; impact of technology on our ability to communicate and the cultural importance of honoring teachers. A self-described working class kid with a ruling class education, Dan never forgot where he came from, and his courses have inspired multiple generations of high school and college students who continue to work for social, economic, and environmental justice. These days, Dan hangs his hat in Austin, Texas. The site of his childhood home is now a Valvoline Instant Oil Change location.
