Dumas then turned his hand to novel-writing, and penned \u003ci\u003eThe Count of Monte Cristo\u003c\/i\u003e and\u003ci\u003e The Three Musketeers\u003c\/i\u003e. After enduring a short period of bankruptcy, he began to travel extensively, keeping up a prodigious output of journalism, short fiction and novels.
